I first developed an interest in law when I joined the debate team in high school. I had always known I wanted to follow a career that allowed me to help people, but it was only when I started debating current laws with fellow classmates that I realised a career in law was for me. In particular, I knew I wanted to make an impact and actually help those who might not necessarily have access to a lawyer but would need help the most.
Working at Kesar & Co, a law firm that has human rights at the heart of its work ethic, has cemented my interests in truly making a difference through a career in law.
Unfortunately, I was due to start looking for work experience opportunities during the COVID lockdown which completely closed off all my options.
Fortunately, I saw an advert about Springpod and their virtual work experience that covered such a vast range of career areas. I decided to sign up for two different work experiences, one in law and one in teaching, in order to really see what a career in these areas would look like. The Springpod virtual work experience in law was an eyeopener to some of the basic yet crucial tasks that a lawyer might undertake.
Since starting work in a law firm, it's safe to say that these tasks have helped me with the actual work I have been completing. The Springpod work experience also provided me with an opportunity to network. The webinars led by professionals in the industry allowed me to get in contact and ask further questions. I received some great responses with further tips on how to gain as much experience as possible and how to stand out during the application process.
My advice to someone considering a solicitor apprenticeship- go for it! It has been the best decision I’ve made.
Apprenticeships provide the perfect balance of studying and first-hand experience of work. If you are unsure about university or apprenticeships then do your research, apply to both and keep your options open. I recommend working on commercial awareness and always speak to a current apprentice if you have any further questions.
An apprenticeship is a big step from sixth form or college but it’s well worth it and you’ll certainly gain invaluable experience along the way.
